Inclined to Care: Lifting the Alleghenies to New Heights, 2013

In Summer 2013, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies welcomed five students as its inaugural Youth Philanthropy Interns. This eight-week program was made possible through a grant from The Heinz Endowments and is based on its long-running similar program in the Pittsburgh area. Throughout the course of their internship, students assessed community needs through research, site visits and interviews. They determined that the region would benefit from a stronger educational program aimed at preparing students for jobs in Bedford, Cambria and Somerset counties and – with $25,000 to award — issued a request for proposals to build a program that will connect students, parents and businesses to meet this objective in a cohesive, sustainable and measurable way.

Propel East – 7th and 8th Grade – Technology Labs

In Spring 2013, as part of a 12-week Creative Arts program focused on technology, Propel East 7th and 8th graders participated in several hands-on labs designed to teach the basic construction and physics that allow audio-based devices (such as microphones and speakers) to function. Over the course of 6 weeks, students learned how to build a functioning microphone using household materials, as well as how to “circuit bend” – the process of rewiring the circuit board inside an audio electronics device (such as a keyboard) to elicit modified sound.
