Pittsburgh Brashear After School: Social Media & 2 Hour Delays

We opened the floor to students at Brashear High School and they came up with two great topics for this week’s round table discussion; the pros and cons of social media and 2 hour delays. The perspective they shared may not be what you would expect, especially the consensus disapproval of a delayed start to the school day.

Brashear Students Build Free Mini Libraries

Brashear High School students, in conjunction with the “Be There” campaign, kicked off a mini library project by donating the first of many free book depositories at Paisano’s Pizza in Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood.

The libraries were built by Brashear students and will be placed around the district, as well as other parts of the city.

SLB was on hand to speak with students and gather audio from the inaugural little library. The first voice you’ll hear belongs to parent volunteer Deb Smallwood.

Pittsburgh Brashear After School: Impressions of America & Being Bilingual

You may have noticed in other Brashear recordings that many of our After School students are international.

This week we continued our round table discussions while embracing that international perspective. Radio club members in Block 1 talked about their first impressions of America as compared to their countries of origin, while Block 3 conversed about the benefits and challenges of becoming/being bilingual.

Pittsburgh Brashear After School: Fighting, Interim Grades, & If I Were Mayor

After School students at Brashear have been having some interesting candid discussions in Radio Club. During this week’s round table, fighting in school was the main topic. Radio Club members talked about school policy, why fighting happens, and alternatives to violence.

Pittsburgh Brashear After School: Keystone Exams

Underclassmen at Brashear started mandatory state testing this week with the Keystone Exams. In a round table setting, students discussed and reflected on the Keystones.
