Inclined to Care: Lifting the Alleghenies to New Heights, 2013

In Summer 2013, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies welcomed five students as its inaugural Youth Philanthropy Interns. This eight-week program was made possible through a grant from The Heinz Endowments and is based on its long-running similar program in the Pittsburgh area. Throughout the course of their internship, students assessed community needs through research, site visits and interviews. They determined that the region would benefit from a stronger educational program aimed at preparing students for jobs in Bedford, Cambria and Somerset counties and – with $25,000 to award — issued a request for proposals to build a program that will connect students, parents and businesses to meet this objective in a cohesive, sustainable and measurable way.

The Green Compass Season 4

Exploring the road to a better Pittsburgh. Where we are and where we are going…

In July 2012, twenty-three students about to enter their first year of college created these nine radio features as Youth Philanthropy Summer Interns at The Heinz Endowments. Because the Summer 2012 internship program focused on issues of sustainability, the resulting features cover a range of community, social and environmental issues. While SLB provided training and coaching, the features presented here were conceived and created entirely by the students in a single week.

The Green Compass Season 3

Twenty-six students about to enter their first year of college (and two older college students) created these radio features as Summer Interns at The Heinz Endowments. Because the Summer 2011 internship program focused on issues of sustainability, the resulting features cover a range of community and environmental issues. While SLB provided training and coaching, the features presented here were conceived and created entirely by the students in a single week.
