MESS: Media Empowerment Student Summit
The Media Empowerment Student Summit held at Carnegie Mellon gave local students a chance to learn from a variety of local professionals including Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Teen Bloc, and Teens 4 Change. The pieces below are from students tried their hand at recording during the SLB audio workshop.
Clairton CASTLE 2014: Three Things About Me
After a discussion about microphones and digital recorders used in producing features for radio, students in Clairton’s CASTLE program wrote and recorded these pieces where they describe themselves in three ways.
Pittsburgh King After School: 3 Things About Me
For our first day of After School with Radio Club, we learned a bit about each other by sharing Three Things about ourselves. This is the first of 10 sessions where we will learn about microphones, digital recorders and the technology used to make professional radio pieces.
Wilkinsburg TIGERS: Radio Club Hopes
In our first week of after school radio club, students shared and recorded what skills, experiences, and proficiencies they hope to gain over the course of the year. Everyone then had the opportunity to edit the wavelength audio. Some students are looking forward to creating music, while others are more interested in focusing on the technical element of audio recording.
The Green Compass Season 6
In July 2014, thirty-two recent high-school graduates created these radio features while serving as Summer Interns at The Heinz Endowments. The resulting features cover a range of community issues. While SLB provided training and coaching, the features presented here were conceived and created entirely by the students in a single week.
