YMAP: Wilkinsburg Student Union – March 2015
The Youth Media Advocacy Project (YMAP) has lead to the formation of the Wilkinsburg High School Student Union. Their mission is to promote a positive learning environment and generate opportunities for their fellow students.
Wilkinsburg After School: Three Things About Me
Students wrote and recorded three things about them and recorded a quick story about what would they do if they got left at the shopping mall all alone.
Wilkinsburg After School: Microphone Building
Students at Wilkinsburg after school program learned about the inside parts of a microphone and how it all works together. Building the microphones out of household materials using just two magnets, a length of copper wire, three washers, a nut, a bolt, plastic straw and cup. Then, after sanding off an insulating coating on their makeshift leads, they were able to test their finished DIY mics by connecting them to a mixer and speakers using alligator clips.
YMAP : Wilkinsburg, Obama and Brashear
The Youth Media Advocacy project teaches local high school students how to use the media to gain a voice in the community, and helps them hone ideas for advocacy campaigns that will aid their schools and communities. Students from Wilkinsburg High School, Pittsburgh Obama and Pittsburgh Brashear return to classrooms after Winter break to discuss education issues and set goals for 2015.
Wilkinsburg After School: Haiku Poems
Students wrote in haiku poem format. It consists of three lines with the first and last line having 5 moras, and the middle line having 7. A mora is a sound unit, much like a syllable, but is not identical to it.
