As part of a course on the Roots of the Civil Rights Movement taught by Associate Professor, Dr. Linda Schifino, Carlow University students traveled through the south in the summers of 2010 and 2012.
For nine days, the students traveled by bus, covering over 2,300 miles through Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Major sites included the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, the lunch counter in Greensboro North Carolina, the National Voting Rights Museum & Institute in Selma, as well as churches and other famous locations that commemorate the Civil Rights Movement.
Through visits at the sights of major events and by meeting and talking with the foot soldiers of the movement, students learned how social justice activism changed the landscape of race relations in America.
