Free Youth Media Center Programs in April

Teens interested in exploring podcasting, writing, music, journalism, and live radio are welcome to join us for our drop-in afterschool (+ Saturday) programs.

The YMC always welcomes new teens and there’s no long-term commitment! Activities are free. The SLB Youth Media Center is co-located in the Children’s Museum on Pittsburgh’s Northside. For more details and our         April Calendar, visit ymc.slbradio.org.

At-A-Glance, Upcoming Activities: Upcoming activities include Recording the News (4/7, 4:30 pm), Poetry Cafe (4/11, 12 pm), Promoting a Broadcast Pt. 1 (4/14, 4:30 pm), Recording the News (4/18, 12 pm), Promoting a Broadcast Pt. 2 (4/21, 4:30 pm), and Citizen Journalism & Mobile Recording (4/48, 4:30 pm) as well as weekly youth reporter meetups (Mondays, 4 pm), Dungeons & Dragons (Wednesdays, 4 pm), and Soap Box (Thursdays, 4 pm), a new program where youth can perform, collaborate, or simply listen as the YMC becomes a home for songs, poems, stories, and on-the-spot improv. Youth can also join us for open studio hours on Mondays through Thursdays from 3:00 to 6:00 pm and Saturdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Activities are free to area teens and take place at our Youth Media Center, co-located in the Children’s Museum on Pittsburgh’s Northside. Voices of the Mercy Corridor, Tuesdays from 4 – 6 pm: Interested in journalism, audio documentaries, interviewing, writing, and editing? Develop these skills as you collect stories from the Mercy Corridor, three historic neighborhoods in Pittsburgh: the Hill District, Oakland, and Uptown.

Streaming the News: Students in Grades 6 to 12 who are interested in journalism, writing, and hosting are invited to participate in a new SLB event: Streaming the News. We’re looking for hosts for 1-hour segments of a live Youth Express webcast focusing on where young people get their information and what they hope the future of journalism looks like in Pittsburgh and beyond. Streaming the News will air LIVE on Saturday, 5/2 from 1 pm to 4 pm from our studios and will feature 100% teen hosts, topics, conversation, listener phone calls, and more. Students can also submit an audio piece as part of our Recording the News Contest. Complete details are available at tinyurl.com/streamingthenews2026. Mark Your Calendars, Spring Break and NFL Draft: The SLB Youth Media Center will be closed for Spring Break beginning on 3/30. Programs will return on 4/6. Additionally, we will be closed from 4/23 until 4/26 for the NFL Draft. Programs will return on 4/27.
