1. A Busy Week of Giving Voice to Other People

We’ve had a busy week.  Our daily classes continued at Propel Montour.  At Winchester Thurston School, we began an oral history project this week in which thirty eleventh graders interviewed nine veterans who served in the Viet Nam war era and also recorded heartfelt reflections from thirty fifth graders about how they were impacted by interviews they conducted with ten people born in other countries.  We also conducting after school programs at Propel Montour and Pittsburgh Manchester, finalized CDs featuring personal narratives from 30-plus students at Pittsburgh Allegheny K-5, helped about 100 children make audio Mother’s Day cards, and made preparations for community oral history projects in Homewood, Hazelwood and the Hill District.

SLB continues to grow every day, both in terms of the number of people and locations we visit but, more importantly, in the depth and impact of our work.  We are grateful for the opportunity to work with more and more children and adults daily.  Thanks for your belief and support in what we do.

2. Make a Keepsake Audio Mother's Day Card

Our studios in the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh are open for children to make Audio CD Cards for Mother’s Day. We’ll conduct a personal interview about the person the card is for and record it on an audio CD that can be decorated, affixed to a special card, and brought home that day as a Mother’s Day gift that will be cherished for a lifetime.  Studio hours are 1 to 4 pm through 5/13. No appointment is necessary.  Purchase of a CD Creation Card Kit from the Museum Store is required with proceeds benefiting SLB programs for youth and families.  Our thanks to Highmark, MSA, Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation and Bender Consulting for their generous support of this year's card making activities.
